Using a Powered Sod Cutter

Using a Powered Sod Cutter

While there are manual sod cutters out there for you to use, if you have a big lawn it would probably take you much too long. For that reason, renting a powered sod cutter would be your best option if you have a larger lawn. Here are the basic steps you need to take to effectively operate your powered sod cutter:

Check your equipment
After you bring back the cutter from the rental store, make sure that everything is in working order. This includes checking the oil levels and making sure the adjuster is at the appropriate height for the depth that you want to cut into the soil.

Do a test run then begin
Before you start the job you will want to do a small test run before getting too involved. Typically motorized sod cutters cut at a width of 16 inches. Once you are satisfied with the depth, start cutting your sod for real.

Storage
If you are planning on using the sod fairly quickly after you cut it, you will want to roll the sod so that the roots face out. If you plan on storing it for a while, the best place to leave it unrolled is on concrete in a shady area so the roots don’t take hold again. Be sure to water it daily if you choose this option.
